Evidence fingerprint: record a SHA-256 hash of a video, photo or screenshot

Keep proof of what you saw. Pick the file, add where and when you saw it, and save a note with its SHA-256 hash for your complaint. The file stays on your device.

If the video shows a child: Do not download, save or forward it, not even as evidence. Report the link straight away on cybercrime.gov.in (Report Women/Child Related Crime, which can be done without giving your name) and on the platform.

What this does

  • Works out the SHA-256 hash of each file you pick: a 64-character fingerprint. If even one byte of the file changes, the hash changes.
  • Saves a plain-text note with the file name, size, hash, the link and platform you add, and the time, to attach to a police or cybercrime.gov.in complaint.
  • Runs only in your browser. The file is not uploaded to us or anyone else.

What this does not do

  • It does not remove anything, and it does not send the hash to any platform.
  • To stop an intimate photo or video of you (real or a deepfake) from being shared, use StopNCII.org if you are an adult, or NCMEC's Take It Down if it was taken when you were under 18. Those services make their own hash on your device and share it with the platforms that take part.
  • To get a post taken down, report it on the platform and complain to its grievance officer, and file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in.
