Fake SIP and mutual fund scams: how to check your money is really invested

Fraudsters borrow the language and logos of mutual funds: cloned AMC apps, WhatsApp 'investment groups', fake statements and KYC messages. A SIP is a way of investing, not a guarantee. Here is how to check the fund, the agent, the payee and your folio.
01 / The short answer
A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is simply a way of putting a fixed amount into a mutual fund scheme at regular intervals. It is not a separate product with assured returns: AMFI notes that mutual fund returns are not guaranteed and values can fall. Anyone promising a fixed or guaranteed SIP return is not describing a mutual fund.
Money leaving your bank is not, by itself, proof that mutual fund units were bought in your name.
02 / How the impersonation works
- Cloned apps and websites that copy a fund house's name and logo.
- Unauthorised WhatsApp and Telegram 'investment groups' run in a fund house's name.
- Forged documents and invented statements that show units or profits that do not exist.
Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC has published a public notice describing exactly these activities in its name. HDFC Mutual Fund separately warns about messages and calls asking you to 'update KYC' or 'verify your account', which aim to capture your login details or OTP. A real KYC update may be needed, but do it only through the official website or app you open yourself.
03 / Check before you pay
- The fund house and scheme. Find the official website and app links through AMFI's list of official mobile applications, not through a link someone sent you. A matching logo or an app-store listing is not enough.
- The person. If an agent or distributor is involved, look up their ARN and name on AMFI's 'Locate a distributor' page, and confirm their phone number independently. A screenshot of a genuine ARN can be copied by someone else.
- The payee. Your money should go to the fund house or its official payment channel, never to a person's UPI ID or account. For SEBI-registered intermediaries, SEBI Check shows whether a bank account, UPI ID or QR code belongs to a registered entity. How to use SEBI Check.
04 / Check after you pay: your folio and statement
Get proof of your units from a source the seller does not control: the fund house or its registrar, or your Consolidated Account Statement (CAS), which AMFI says includes purchases, redemptions and SIP transactions. A private dashboard in an app someone recommended is not proof.
A transaction may take a few days to appear, and CAS has its own delivery timing. A missing entry the next morning is a reason to check with the fund house, not proof of theft.
05 / What is not a scam
A loss when markets fall, a commission, an exit load or a slow statement are not fraud on their own. Mis-selling, such as being pushed into an unsuitable scheme, is a complaint for the fund house or distributor. Fraud is when the product, the person or the payment is fake.
06 / If you have paid
- Call 1930 and file at cybercrime.gov.in. How to report.
- Tell your bank at once, and cancel any UPI AutoPay or mandate you set up for the fake SIP. Bank fraud numbers.
- Contact the real fund house through its official website to confirm there is no folio in your name, and save the app name, links, chats and payment references.
07 / Sources and limits
The patterns here come from fund houses' own notices and from AMFI and SEBI guidance. We found no official figure for SIP-impersonation losses in India. Fake trading apps and investment scams.
